Frequently Asked Questions
Got a question about any of the services we offer?
Before getting in touch, have a look below at some of the most common questions we get asked.
How do you verify the watches authenticity?
We use expert watchmakers who examine serial and model numbers against manufacturers records, we check the movement and specific brand hallmarks to confirm that the watch is genuine or counterfeit. If for any reason our watchmakers are uncertain, the watch is then returned to it’s manufacturer to get fully serviced and authenticated.
Why buy a second hand watch?
One of the biggest advantages of purchasing a second hand watch is avoiding significant depreciation which new watches incur. Secondly you are avoiding long sometimes multiple year waiting lists for desired models. If the second hand dealer has your desired make and model you can purchase it there and then instead of going on a long waiting list.
Does the watch come with it’s original box and papers?
Box and papers (original warranty card, instruction booklet, swing tags etc) are highly valued in the pre-owned or grey market, as they provide crucial proof of origin and can significantly increase the watches re-sale value.
What affects the watches value?
The value depends on the brand, model, age, worn or unworn, and whether it includes the original box, papers and swing tags. With these items brands like Rolex, Patek Phillipe, Audimars Piguet etc tend to retain there value more.
Are box and papers essential?
It is preferred to have them, but they are not essential. The absence of the box and papers will affect the offer and value of the watch. The watch is the most important factor as people wear the watch not the box and papers.
Can you confirm that the watch isn’t stolen?
We always seek assurance that the seller has clear ownership of the watch and that the transaction is 100% legal. We also check The Watch Register to make sure that the watch has not been reported lost or stolen. We will always require I.D and proof of address from the seller before any purchase can be completed.
What is the physical and mechanical condition of the watch?
A record of past servicing especially from the manufacturer or a recognised specialist, indicates that the watch has been well looked after and maintained, this also helps predict future maintenance needs. If none can be given the watch is then sent to it’s manufacturer for a full service.
Does the watch have a documented service history?
Does it have a past record of servicing, especially from the manufacturer or a recognised specialist. We always try to get these records as this can show if the watch has been well looked after and maintained properly by the previous owner, this can also give us an indication of when its next maintenance is due.
Have any parts been replaced, if so are they original?
If any parts have been replaced, original parts are always preferred by collectors and maintain better value, the use of after market parts can be a red flag and may lower the price of the watch. We always give our watches a thorough inspection, if there are any after market parts we will always inform the customer of exactly what are and what aren’t original manufacturers parts.
How do you determine the market value and price?
We perform market research, using auction results, online platforms and price guides to ensure that the price is fair and competitive for each specific make, model, age and condition.
Can I trade my older watch for a newer stock model?
We offer a trade in service where you can use the value of your trade watch against a stock watch. This may involve the watch cash, or your watch plus additional monetary value from us. This all depends on the watch that you are trading.
How do I get a valuation on my watch?
You can either send your watch into our office, where we will inspect your watch, or we can offer in person valuations of your watch at a convenient time and location.
What are your rights when buying from a trader or business?
- Satisfactory quality:- The watch must not be faulty or damaged at the time of purchase and should be of a reasonable quality, taking into account its age and price. Some older or vintage models may come with some mild scratches and signs of wear but upon purchasing the watch you as the purchaser agree to purchase the watch in it’s current condition when the sale has concluded
- Fit for purpose:- The watch should be able to be used for the purpose it was supplied for, e.g., it should keep time. In some older or vintage models time keeping may have slightly faster or slightly slower time keeping which should be corrected by a service.
- As described:- The watch must match the description given by the seller. If the seller advertised it as being serviced, it must have been. If it is advertised as unworn it will be an unworn watch, if it is described as worn but in very good condition it will be as described.
What are your rights when buying from a private seller?
- Your legal rights are significantly reduced when buying from a private seller.
- The watch must still be “as described,” but the seller is not obliged to inform you of any faults that you could have reasonably checked for yourself before buying.
Do you offer a warranty or returns policy?
We offer a 14 day return policy, a full refund is given as long as the watch is returned in the exact same condition, box, packaging and condition that you received it in. There should be no damage, scratches, dents on the watch and the inner and outer boxes returned in the same condition that it was received in, this should also be accompanied by all paperwork that was received at the time of purchase. We also offer an 12 month in house warranty that covers mechanical defects in addition to the remaining (if any warranty is available) original manufacturers warranty. This specifically covers the internal movement and time keeping issues that have not been caused by customer tampering, negligence and or misuse.
What things are typically excluded in the returns/warranty policy
- Normal wear and tear (e.g scratches on the case, strap/bracelet, clasp or crystal).
- Accidental damage, impact damage or misuse.
- Water damage, unless the watch is explicitly guaranteed as water resistant/waterproof by the seller at time of sale.
- The battery (if your watch has one).
- Straps, links, clasps or other external components.
- Water damage or general damage resulting from a third party opening the watch case or performing unauthorised repairs without the retailers consent.
- Any damage caused by water or any other fluid ingress due to the crown not being closed or screwed down properly.
- If there are any repairs that are necessary the watch must be returned to us at Edinburgh & Lothian Luxury Watches to be inspected and repaired as necessary by us.
